The total area of UP is in the tune of about 236,000 sq Km and is the state with highest population in India. It is a well known fact that police force in the state is largest in the world due to the sheer size of the population of the state.  Total number of employees in the force is about 1.70 Lakhs which is quite huge. It is a well known fact that there are 72 districts across which the forces are spread to maintain law and order in the state in an exemplary manner. Apart from above, there are various personals who work in different departments like intelligence, anti corruption along with training and the forensic. They are instrumental in providing valuable support in preventing the crimes.
In 1860, the Departments of UP Police was created with the recommendations of the H.M court and has since then been expanded to maintain vigilance and provide security to the residents of the state.  In the colonial era H.M court became the inspector general of police of the state that covered the areas in the north western frontier province. The police force is divided into eight departments that work in tandem to provide effective results to the users in an effective manner. Provincial police is one of the most important components that work along with the railway and the municipal police to effectively counter crimes without any hiccups.  The rural area is served by the rural police that dealt with the crime in villages in an impeccable manner. Cantonment Police is mainly operational in the areas where the army families stay and is mainly entrusted with maintaining law and order in the above mentioned location.

After independence B.N lahiri was the first person to become the inspector general of Departments of UP Police in U.P. According to the experts, the State police have delivered a commendable performance in recent times in the crime control arena. They also played a stellar role in the maintaining law and order in an impeccable manner.  In the 1952, the police force got the colors of the uniform from the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It was a monumental and proud occasion for the police force of the state. Maintaining the communal harmony in the state is one of the most important objectives which have been achieved by the police force. They have helped to inculcate a sense of security among the people which would go a long way in promoting developmental work within the state.

It is a well known fact that more than 25000 personals have sacrificed their lives to maintain the security in the state and protect the life of the numerous citizens. The government has provided different awards to the Departments of UP Police for exceptional bravery and courage while fighting the criminals in an exemplary manner. There are different types of units which are working together to deliver exceptional results to the citizens. State crime record bureau is working along with the Fire services and the railway police to enforce law and order in different spheres in an amazing manner. Traffic directorate and the human rights also provide valuable contribution with the conventional police force.
